A person who is bleeding severely can die from blood loss within five minutes. In many cases, this happens before professional first responders can even arrive on the scene.

That is why the STOP THE BLEED® campaign was created. It is a national initiative designed to turn bystanders into “immediate responders.” At Safety Training Pros, we know that when it comes to traumatic injury, the most important tools are the hands of the person standing right there.

What is STOP THE BLEED®?

The program was launched by the American College of Surgeons to teach the public three simple actions that can stop life-threatening bleeding. Much like CPR training, this program focuses on empowering everyday people—teachers, office workers, and neighbors—to take charge until help arrives.

Why Is This Training So Important?

Traumatic injuries can happen anywhere: a car accident on I-80, a mishap with a power tool in a Sacramento garage, or a fall on a job site.

  • Time is the Enemy: You can lose a life-threatening amount of blood in less time than it takes to dial 911 and wait for an ambulance.
  • Anyone Can Do It: You don’t need a medical degree to save a life. You just need to know where to push and how to use a few simple tools.
  • Confidence Saves Lives: Most people hesitate because they are afraid of “making it worse.” Training replaces that fear with the confidence to act.

The Three Main Techniques

The “Stop the Bleed” protocol focuses on three primary ways to control blood loss:

  1. Pressure: Using your hands to apply firm, direct pressure to the wound.
  2. Packing: Filling a deep wound with gauze or cloth and then applying pressure.
  3. Tourniquets: Using a specialized device to stop blood flow to an arm or leg.

What’s in a Bleeding Control Kit?

In 2026, many Sacramento businesses and public spaces are now co-locating “Bleed Kits” next to their AEDs. A standard kit typically includes:

  • A C-A-T Tourniquet: A high-quality, windlass-style tourniquet.
  • QuikClot or Compressed Gauze: Specialized dressings to help blood clot faster.
  • Gloves and Shears: To keep the responder safe and allow quick access to the wound.
  • Emergency Blankets: To help keep the patient warm (preventing shock).

The Power of Hands-On Confidence

You can watch a video on how to apply a tourniquet, but it is a very different experience to actually tighten one until the “pulse” stops.

At Safety Training Pros, our Stop the Bleed sessions are entirely focused on hands-on practice. We use specialized training limbs and real tourniquets so you can feel exactly how much pressure is required. This practice builds the muscle memory that stays with you when adrenaline is high. When you walk away from our training, you aren’t just “informed”—you are ready.
