October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month

It was a typical workday at Sacramento’s water treatment facility when City employee Brett Martin suddenly collapsed. His coworkers — Quintno Sarani, David Jameson, and Antonio Jimenez — immediately sprang into action, performing CPR and using the facility’s AED until paramedics arrived. Their quick response saved his life.

Brett later reunited with his rescuers to personally thank them. The full story is documented by CBS Sacramento.

“If they hadn’t started CPR right away, I wouldn’t be here,” Brett said.”

Why CPR and AED Skills Matter

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) can strike anyone, anywhere — often without warning. More than 70% of cardiac arrests happen outside of hospitals, commonly at home or in the workplace. Without immediate action, survival rates drop quickly.

When CPR begins right away, the chances of survival can double or even triple. AEDs — simple, portable devices that can restore a normal heart rhythm — are a critical part of the chain of survival.

Brett’s story is a powerful reminder that being prepared can save lives. Quick action, even by non-medical professionals, can make the difference between life and death.

Making Your Workplace and Community Ready

Training in CPR, AED use, first aid, Stop the Bleed and Narcan administration empowers people to respond confidently in emergencies. Whether it’s coworkers in an office, staff at a school, or volunteers at a community event, knowing how to act can give someone a second chance at life.

Workplaces and public spaces with accessible AEDs and trained personnel are far better equipped to respond when seconds matter.

Join the Movement: World Restart a Heart Day

On October 16, communities around the world will celebrate World Restart a Heart Day, an initiative to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and hands-only CPR.

You don’t need to be a healthcare provider to make a difference. Learning CPR and AED skills equips anyone to act when it matters most.

Be prepared to save a life.

This Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, consider taking a CPR or AED course and making sure your workplace, school, or home is ready. Quick action can save lives — it could even save someone you love.
