Safety Training for Swim Coaches

Red CrossThe American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches (STSC) course, developed in partnership with USA Swimming, is intended to teach those involved in competitive swimming, including coaches, officials, athletic trainers and aquatic exercise trainers, how to help maintain a comfortable and safe environment for swimmers, prevent accidents and emergencies and respond to swimmers with illnesses or injuries in water or on land.

Participants can also get certified in CPR & AED. This will help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac and breathing emergencies. The course teaches the skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.

Online Course –
The online portion of the Safety Training for Swim Coaches Blended Learning course consists of four chapters. Information is presented through video slideshows with audio voiceover. Other features of the online course include quizzes to check understanding, access to the e-book supplement (See Safety Training for Swim Coaches Supplement link below), additional resources (including links to helpful websites, fact sheets and skill sheets), Read Along functionality (which provides a transcript of the audio) and More Info sections (which allow participants to read in more detail about the topic under discussion). The online portion of the course concludes with a 50-question final exam.

What will my certificate say?

How long is my certification valid?

Two years.

Can I take this class online only?

Yes, if you are certified in Lifeguard or Shallow Water Lifeguard you can take the 3 hour online only training, including the final exam. There is no in-water skill session for this class.

Where is the written exam that used to be on the USA Swimming website?

– The option to just take the written exam is no longer available.
– Coaches must now complete the Safety Training for Swim Coaches Blended Learning course, which includes an online component and an in-water skills session.

What are the course prerequisites?

To participate in the Safety Training for Swim Coaches course, participants must be at least 15 years of age on or before the final scheduled session of the course. There are no skill prerequisites to enroll in the Safety Training for Swim Coaches course. However, because there is an in-water skills session, participants must be comfortable in chest-deep water.

What are the certification requirements?

Upon successful completion of the Safety Training for Swim Coaches full or review course, each participant will receive an American Red Cross Safety Training for Swim Coaches/First Aid certificate, which is valid for 2 years. To receive the course completion certificate, the participant must:
• Complete the online portion of the course, including achieving a minimum score of 80 percent on the online written exam.
• Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities, including in-water skills.

How do I sign up?

Register for and and complete a Safety Training for Swim Coaches course that is scheduled through Safety Training Pros.

Your Safety Training Pro instructor will send you access to complete the online course content. After you complete the online content you must also complete the in-water skills session scheduled as part of the course. If a coach has a current Safety Training for Swim Coaches certificate, you are eligible for a review course.
